As a first year adviser to my own staff and a second time presenter at MIPA, I can't express how lucky I am to do what I do. Yesterday, I stood before over 100 student journalists and presented 20-ish ways to improve your InDesign skills.
I don't think I have heard so many teenagers groan in a room that didn't require a grading scale. Now, this didn't come from being angry with the presentation, but the kids seemed to be upset with themselves. I watched as students grew in energy from hushed tones to outbursts of teenage rage with the explanation of master pages, the align panel and keyboard shortcuts, among other tips.
It was nothing short of pure journalism-nerdy-awesomeness.
I have posted the presentation below, and I hope that you can take at least one or two (or even twenty!) tips and tricks back to your publication. You may know many of these tips/tricks--but I'm certain you will learn something.
Until next time,
Cody T. Harrell
